Committee
El Jagüey

History
The El Jagüey canton, located in the municipality of Conchagua, Department of La Unión, is a community that is developing with the help of its compatriots who are abroad, particularly in the metropolitan region of Washington and adjacent counties in Maryland and Virginia.
Since 2014, the first board of directors of the Unidos Jagüeyeños-USA Committee was formed with the following people:
Claudia Acosta
Fidel Benítez
Rosario Escobar
Luis Rivas

Many families in El Jagüey live from artisanal fishing. They cannot exploit beach tourism much because, like El Tamarindo beach, there are no waves. Contrary to the neighboring beaches of Las Tunas, El Icacal or Playas Negras where there are regular sized waves.

Works
Since 2014, the Committee - and the years that followed - have done what they can to ensure that there is never a lack of sufficient funds, which are used for projects of several thousand dollars such as the purchase of land for $25,000, which they donated to have a field built. basketball for children and young people from the El Maculís hamlet, a neighbor of El Jagüey. They also disbursed funds of $16,000 to purchase musical equipment for the school's Peace Band and a concrete wall behind the school, which also cost $16,000. Sometimes they receive collaboration from the Funtamarindo foundation.
Some projects have stopped supporting—such as help for relatives of people who died—due to disputes that arose over handling the $350 they received as a donation for funeral expenses, but they do continue to deliver basic baskets to families of low economic resourses.
Festivities
The canton's patron saint festivities take place the last week of January and the first week of February. For some years now, Committee directors have been traveling from the Washington area to organize the parties, where they become a thousand uses, since there is little collaboration on the part of the youth and adults of the community if they do not receive financial remuneration. During the celebrations there are parties, floats, sporting events and other fun to enjoy with the family.
Curiosities
El Jagüey received help from the United States Southern Command for the construction of a small hospital, which will be inaugurated in the coming months; which some directors of the Jagüeyeños Unidos-USA Committee plan to attend.
The construction of an international airport was a campaign promise of the current Salvadoran government and El Jagüey is on the list of potential sites where that infrastructure would be built, although they have to wait some time to see if that site is accepted for construction.
The Committee has collaborated to maintain the park of that canton, which currently looks very different from what it used to be, after painting it, pruning the trees that surround it and other improvements so that the community feels in a calm and peaceful environment. clean.
