Quelepa

Historia
Quelepa (whose etymological meaning is Jaguar de Piedra) is a small town of lenca origin of about 4,500 thousand inhabitants, despite the fact that - according to historians - it was founded before the Christian era. At present it is an important archaeological site of small buildings - not as gigantic as those of Guatemala or Mexico - but that date back to times long before the Spaniards arrive at the American continent. The ruins are on the banks of the small San Esteban River and what was the Hacienda El Obrajuelo, so it is in private land, although the Government has declared it as cultural heritage. Several decades ago it was easy to find objects with animal forms and other forms in areas near the ruins, when farmers plowed the land for sown or drilling the earth for several reasons. To honor the origin of its name there is the Jaguar Turicentro de Piedra a short distance from the center of the population.

December 8 is the day of the conception or day of the shells, as women (and some men) are known that bear that name.
