Unforgettable dates
October 10 is a special day in the life of each person from Santa Marta, a very close community of the department of Cabañas, which each year meet in Herdon, Virginia or Bethesda, Maryland.
It was on October 10, 1987 when hundreds of residents returned to that canton from refugee camps, Honduras, where despite the inclement remained for six years, after in the 80s they were forced to leave Their homes by military personnel in the middle of the armed conflict, for considering them "collaborators" of the guerrillas.
The War ended with the signing of the peace agreements in January 1992 between representatives of the government of that time and the belligerent forces of the Farabundo Martí Nacional (FMLN) front with the support of the United Nations and friendly countries such as Mexico, France, Spain, among others.
Although many young people were born after October 10, 1987, they join the celebrations with their parents or their grandparents every year, but also to remember many families who were riddled by the Salvadoran army when crossing the Sumpul River towards Mesa Grande.
At present, Santa Marta is a very active community and has been mentioned as a place where true socialism is lived, since everyone tries to share what they harvest or produce including those who live abroad, who are always pending of that it is necessary in the community that saw them born or that receives them with open arms when they visit it.
